Vordingborg
is one of the southern-most towns on Zealand. I stayed the night here
before going on to the island of Møns. Valdemar I lived here. He
became the first king of a reunited Denmark in 1157. The tower to the
left- Gåsetårnet, or Goose Tower, is the lone remnant of a large medieval
fortress. A golden goose sits on top, which was placed there by Valdemar
IV to express his feelings towards the Germans of the time, who had declared war
on him. The garden pictured above is located on the grounds nearby.
The top of the tower was closed for renovation (thus adding one more thing to
the "closed" list on my trip).
