Altes Rathaus, Munich, Germany

The building in the middle of the picture is the old City Hall, in downtown Munich.  To the left of where I am standing (and not visible), is the new City Hall, or Rathaus.

The Old Rathaus was built in the late 15th century.  It has gone through several style changes- first to Baroque and then back to Gothic in the 1860's.  The tower is 55m tall (180 ft), and was rebuilt in 1975 following destruction in World War 2.  The hall was replaced by the new Rathaus in the mid-to-late 1800's.

This shot was taken obviously at night, a few weeks before Christmas, 1992.  The Kriskindlmarkt was going on- which is the Christ Child Market, or pre-Christmas market.  Many traditional German crafts are sold here, along with Gluhwein, a hot, mulled wine that warms you up in the cold weather.  A majority of the Market is actually going on behind me (and there are a huge number of stalls).  In the foreground, you can see one of the stalls, well-lit from the inside.  The blue church in  the background is the Heiliggeistkirche, or Holy Ghost Church.

A tripod was used to steady the shot, and the exposure was about one minute on Fuji Velvia (ASA 50).  This had the effect of causing most of the people to blur out of the photo.  There were a few people who actually stood still for the duration of both shots, thus providing a sort of human anchor for scale.
