Europaplatz, Berlin, Germany
You are seeing the view westward from Europaplatz towards Breitscheidplatz, on Tauentzienstraße.  The church in the center is Kaiser-Wilhelm Gedächtniskirche, or Memorial Church).  It was gutted in World War II, and is now preserved as a ruin and will not be restored.

The twisted sculpture in the foreground makes an excellent frame for this scene.  I have no information on what this sculpture is, or who did it.  To me, however, it represents the two Berlins, East and West, of the same makeup and intertwined, but never touching.  Of course that reality ceased to exist in 1989 when the wall fell.  But it is a powerful symbolism of over thirty years of separation that should never have occurred.

The tall building to the right is the Europa Center.  It is 22 stories tall, and is full of boutiques, pubs, cinemas, discos, etc...

Berlin, East and West.  Europaplatz is in the west side.  The shaded area is enlarged to the right.
Close up- Downtown West Berlin.  The purple spot is where the photo was taken.
