I am not sure what these artifacts are, but they look like mobile phones to me- I work for Nokia, so I consider myself an expert on things that look like mobile phones.  I'm sure they had a short range and even shorter battery life, but notice that they were made of wood, and hence environmentally friendly to make and dispose of.
