Puna Pau, Easter Island
Puna Pao is the other quarry on the island. Rano Raraku is where they carved the giant moai (see Rano Raraku gallery), but this crater is where they carved the topknots, which went on top of the moai once they were in place. The topknots were supposedly to represent a hair style, i.e., tied up on top. However, apparently it's not believed by everyone because there was also a tradition that involved putting stones on dead people's heads in at least some Polynesian cultures. This crater sits on top of Maunga Vai Ohao, and is just outside of Hanga Roa.
