Roadside Rest, I-40, Arkansas
I stopped in this roadside rest in order to take some photos documenting a disaster that had occurred only a few days before- the great ice storm of 2000. One day after Christmas, 2000, Arkansas and Oklahoma got hid hard by an ice storm. This was not the first of the season, either. In the middle of December, another storm hit Arkansas pretty hard as well, and they were just recovering from that. Power was knocked out for what was predicted to be weeks for some of the more rural communities. Water supplies were contaminated, so residents had to boil water to drink (problem: no electricity to boil with). Two days later the roads were cleared and I was able to pass through. I must say, aside from the tremendous human costs- it was very beautiful. I've tried to capture some of that in the following series of shots.
