Yellowstone NP, Mammoth Hot Springs (Orange Spring Mound)
This is part two of Mammoth Hot Springs. The first set of pictures you saw here were the springs that came up out of the ground and then cascaded downhill, creating the terraces you saw. The other part has these features which due to the flatter nature of the surrounding terrain, built themselves upwards. Orange Spring Mound is composed of two springs, each situated at the top of an orange area (bacteria & algae). The area has several of these that are also inactive and washed out, and then years later, pop back to life. Orange Spring Mounds was the most impressive one here. You can see in the left white area dead trees that were surrounded by mineral deposits, slowly burying them over the years.
