All the mirrors do is bend the light path to keep the scanning mechanism compact.  Think of the lens as your eye- if your eye was there, you could look at mirror 5 and see the entire width of the scanning surface.

If you remove the mirrors and unbend the lines, you can see the actual field of view of the lens, and hence the practicality of the assembly.
