Christchurch, New Zealand
Christchurch became was founded in 1856, and work on this cathedral started 8 years later in 1864.  However, money concerns and lack of initial enthusiasm contributed to the 40 years it took to finish.  Three earthquakes damaged the spire repeatedly during construction, and in 1901 a wooden spire covered in copper replaced the stone one that had already been erected.
