Monuriki Island
(Cast Away Island), Fiji
Monuriki Island is famous, and also known as Cast Away Island
these days (and not to be confused with Castaway Island Resort, elsewhere in
Fiji). The Tom Hanks movie Cast Away was filmed here in 2000. It's a
pretty good movie- I recommend watching it. I didn't see the movie myself
until after I was home, but it was fun that way because I could reminisce about
our visit to the island. Funny thing about the movie- it seemed to be a
remote island, and he spent more than four years there. In reality, you
can see Yanuya Island and the village on it just a couple of miles away- on a
calm day you could probably swim to it.
