Tongariro National Park, New Zealand
Tongariro National Park was surreal. Normally it's very beautiful, and even erupted in 1996. But we were running late that day coming from Rotorua and came through the north end of the park after sunset. This is what we saw- the photos are not doctored. The sky was purplish pink, the slopes covered with white snow and milky white clouds pouring over them. The temperature was bordering on freezing, sleet and snow were threatening to fall and we were in the middle of nowhere with the car windows steaming up and the defroster not doing it's job. It was surreal and beautiful. Luckily, the bad weather wasn't too intense, and we did make it to New Plymouth (see first picture in this gallery), albeit at 10pm or so- a late evening capping off a long day.
