Opera House, Sydney, Australia
Here's another view showing the individual elements- sections of intersecting circles cut at extreme angles.  The original design was intriguing (and was at first rejected by the judges of the design competition), but it took the architect four years to figure out how to actually build it.  The idea for an opera house started in the late '40s- this design was chosen by around 1960.  It wasn't completed until the early '70s, and many times the original cost (and several governments later).  Also, it isn't just an opera house- it is a complete performing arts center- the larger hall is actual for an orchestra.  Plus, it has two other stages for plays, plus a newer, smaller stage, which now occupies the location of the former library.
