Here's another view showing the individual elements- sections of intersecting
circles cut at extreme angles. The original design was intriguing
(and was at first rejected by the judges of the design competition), but
it took the architect four years to figure out how to actually build it.
The idea for an opera house started in the late '40s- this design was chosen
by around 1960. It wasn't completed until the early '70s, and many
times the original cost (and several governments later). Also, it
isn't just an opera house- it is a complete performing arts center- the
larger hall is actual for an orchestra. Plus, it has two other stages
for plays, plus a newer, smaller stage, which now occupies the location
