Sofitel, Papeete, Tahiti
This fellow was perched in front of our hotel, the Sofitel. I rather
imagine this is a copy. Tahiti is rich in Polynesian culture, a culture
which pervades the Pacific in several forms. The statue carving on Tahiti,
while developed, to me doesn't appear to have reached the fevered pitch on
Easter Island, but the people of Tahiti were the forefathers of the Easter
Islanders, and the Tahitian tradition became the Easter Island obsession.
One interesting note is that Tahiti's full name is Tahiti Nui, while
Easter Island's name is Rapa Nui. If interested in more about
Easter
Island, please see that area of my site.
