A close up of the tower shows the windows place wherever and for whatever reason.  The white stone in the towers were built by the Swedes.  When the castle was captured by the Russians (presumably it was not doing it's job), they added the brick tops to it to give it some extra height.  Perhaps that was the defect that allowed it to be captured in the first place? :)
