Turku was the original capitol of Finland, back when Sweden was running the country.  Turku Castle was founded in 1280 at the mouth of the Aurajoki River.  It has been added to extensively over the ages, and although it originally sat on an island of sorts, it is now inland a ways, due to Finland's constant rise from the sea following the last glacial period.
