Heidelberg, founded in the late 12th century, is a place that must be visited- just on a better day than I picked.  It was rainy and it was difficult to get a good shot off.  The castle is built of Red Neckar sandstone (it's on the Neckar River) and is a great example of German Renaissance architecture.
