Mainz, Germany
One of the great things about Germany is that no matter where you drive- you find cool places to stop and spend some time.  Mainz is one of those cities.  I honestly didn't expect that much from Mainz before I got there, because of it's vicinity to Frankfurt- one of the more industrialized parts of Germany.  But, at the end of my Rhine tour, needing a place to sleep, we drove into Mainz, and lo and behold, we found this awesome city.

This is a great 3D photo of the main church in the center of Mainz.  There is so much depth information here, as the image of the church in the background straddles one of the supports for the structure in the foreground, which itself has a lot of depth information.  To top it off, the orb in the middle of the foreground structure is the moon, hiding wispily behind a thin veneer of clouds.  You can also see a planet (either Venus or Jupiter) at the top of the picture.  The church was started in 975, but was completed in the 11th-13th centuries.  "Modern" Mainz itself was founded in 742- although early settlements date from 38 B.C.  The Market Fountain, shown here, was built in 1526.

Stadtmitte.  Downtown Mainz, in Cathedral Square (Domplätze), is where this photo was taken, at about the location of the purple spot.
