Big Ben, London, England
Hey, look kids.  Big Ben, Parliament!  I couldn't get that movie (European Vacation) out of my mind while in the vicinity of this building.  If you've ever been to Europe, I think you will enjoy this movie (personally, I thought it was the better of that series).

It was quite a beautiful day when I was here.  In fact, England was undergoing a bit of a drought at the time- unlucky for them, but lucky for me, the tourist.  I visited here in 1990, staying with my parent's friends Ian and Sheila.  We pretty much did the whirlwind trip and saw the major sites in a couple of days.  I made it back in April 1998 on a stopover from Finland, but the weather was dreadful, I didn't get any pictures, and I caught my worst cold in several years.

Big Ben is really the name of the 13-ton bell, named for Sir Benjamin Hall, the First Commissioner of Works in 1859, the year the bell was hung.  The tower is actually called the Clock Tower.  It is 320 feet high, and the clock is 23 feet in diameter.

London- city map.  The highlighted area is the where Big Ben and Parliament are.
Close up- Downtown London.  The purple spot is about where I stood to take the picture, and the very light blue spot next to it is the location of the Clock Tower, or Big Ben.
