Just a short distance west of Limerick is Bunratty Castle.  Built in the early 1400's by the McNamara's, this castle is a very large block, and quite impressive.  Unfortunately there's a Irish folk park adjacent to it that is overtly touristy.  There's also several hotels and a number of restaurants and pubs here as well.
