Clonmacnoise Monastic Complex
Clonmacnoise is considered one of the most important, if not the most important monastic sites in Ireland.  It sits on the banks of the River Shannon is believed to have been founded in 548.  Between the 7th and 12th centuries, monks from all over Europe came here to study and pray.  It is responsible for Ireland having reputation for saints and scholars while the rest of Europe languished in the Dark Ages.  Despite numerous attacks by Vikings and locals, it took the English in 1552 to completely remove anything of value.
