Republic of San Marino
San Marino is the world's oldest and smallest republic. It is completely surrounded by Italy, and about 2 hours' drive from Florence, which is to the west. It is more than 1500 years old, and only 62 square km. or 23 square miles in area. It sits on the top of Mount Titano and has a population of 20,000. If other than to buy stamps (one of their exports), go for the view. You can see the coast to the east and the Italian highlands to the west- which happens to be this view.
