Don't blink when driving down the eastern coast of Italy, or you will miss San Marino, a tiny independent country completely surrounded by, and basically dependent on, Italy.  It is the world's oldest and smallest republic at just 23 square miles (62 square kilometers).  It has a population of about 20,000, has it's own coins and stamps, and has diplomatic relations with 35 countries.

The capital sits on Mt. Titano, a triple-peaked mountain, which affords you these wonderful views.  I recommend you stop here if you are in Italy.  I also recommend you click on the button below for a few more pictures in San Marino.

N. Central Italy.  This map shows where San Marino is with respect to Florence (Firenze).  As you can see, there isn't a direct rout between Florence and San Marino- but it is a beautiful route.
San Marino.  Blue marks the spot, and the arrow marks the direction of the view.
