La Sagrada Familia, Barcelona, Spain
I didn't know I was going to enjoy Barcelona as much as I did once I got there.  The reason is Gaudi- the architect who created the cathedral shown in this photograph.  Although he died in the 1920's, he was more than a century ahead of his time.  His building designs were organic and bizarre, and many times outright beautiful.  And, his buildings litter this city.  Upon seeing this cathedral, I bought a book of his buildings and a map and hunted them down.  He even designed a city park.

It must be something about the sun or the people here- my favorite two artists in the world are from this area.  In addition to Gaudi, Salvador Dali was from near here.  (His works, however, are largely collected in a museum in St. Petersburg, Florida).

This is a wonderful city, and although I haven't visited any other cities in Spain (and I want to), I would recommend this city first and foremost.  It is stunningly beautiful, and just a few hours drive from the Pyrenees, the rugged mountains that separate France and Spain, and are home to an often overlooked and beautiful country- Andorra.

When La Sagrada Familia (the Sacred Family) is finished, it will be over 500 feet tall, or 40% of the height of the Sears Tower in Chicago.  The central dome will be 50% taller than these spires, and will be egg-shaped.  It was started in 1882, and at one point, the estimated completion date was to be around 2200.  I certainly hope they finish it before then- I want to see the finished product.  Since this photo was taken, substantial progress has been made on the interior and the walls on the left side.  It doesn't look like this anymore.
