Stockholm, Sweden
Stockholm was my very first European city to visit.  In 1989, on my first trip, it was not such a popular destination, so it was quite a pleasant place to visit.  These days, it has become quite the tourist destination.  Still, despite the crowds (and it isn't exactly cheap), it is well worth visiting.

The city sits on 14 islands, and with all the bridges and waterways it is quite beautiful.  A total of about 24,000 islands make up the archipelago around Stockholm- but that counts every rock that sits out of the water.

The view in the picture above is from the City Hall tower on the north bank of the waterway, and you are looking at the island of Gamla Stan, the oldest part of the city at 700 years old.  The king resides there, and many old churches, cobbled streets, and underground restaurants and bars.  It has quite an ambience.

Click on the button below to see more photos in Stockholm, and a couple in the nearby city of Uppsala.

Stockholm area.  This shows the area around Stockholm, in central eastern Sweden.  I've highlighted both Stockholm and Uppsala to the north.
Downtown Stockholm.  The blue dot shows the location the photo was taken from, and the arrow the direction in which it was taken.
