Curitiba, Brazil
The town of Curitiba is the biggest city in Paraná.  At 1 million people, it's about the size of Dallas, where I live.  It, however, feels like a smaller city.  It is generally clean and one of the safer cities in Brazil.  This "old town" area was definitely pleasant and had some very good restaurants in it.  Curitiba is also the gateway to a stretch of gorgeous coastline, and the starting point for a dramatic train ride to the coast that is a cliff hanger.
