Ahu Akivi

These seven moai were pretty intense.  They are the only ones to face outwards towards the ocean, and they seem to me to represent the founder of the Rapa Nui, Hotu Matua, and his six sons, facing in approximately the direction of Tahiti, where they are believed to have come from.  This site was restored by William Mulloy and others in 1960.

Wild (?) horses were roaming around Ahu Akivi the first time I visited it.  They only stayed around for a few minutes, munching on the grass here and there, and in these cases, directly in the ahu, as if it were some sort of feeding trough.  These are not the same horse- there were maybe ten of them, total.

An oblique view of Ahu Akivi.  Behind them you can see the dirt road leading to the complex.
