Rano Kau on Easter Island

Rano Kau is one of the most scenic, beholding sights on the island. Mystic moai aside, the sheer beauty of this sheer crater makes it nearly worth the trip. You are looking southward here towards Antarctica. The Pacific Ocean is visible through the window on the far rim of the crater. Click on the image to the right for a larger view. If you look on the far wall of the crater above, you will see a small splotch of fuchsia. I've enlarge the patch of flowers on the left. I'm not sure what it is, but it adds a very nice touch to the overall photograph. Just above these flowers starts the ceremonial village of Orongo, where there are many earth-topped short round houses, and where the Birdman Cult ceremonies took place.

One of the signs scattered at the various sites around the island. This one is for Ahu Vinapu, of which I have several 3D's in the 3D gallery for the West end of the island. Geographically, Vinapu is on the east slopes of Rano Kau, on the outward slopes of the left side of the crater above.
