Ahu Tongariki
Ahu Tongariki sits here with the backdrop of the cliffs from the volcano Maunga Poike. It sits on the east side of the island, and is in an absolutely stunning setting, as this shot-from-a-distance shows. The far eastern tip of the island is not accessible easily by car.
| This lead-in shot on the main page, shown on the right, was taken from
near where the cars are parked, at the right of the photograph
above. The 15 moai were restored in the early 1990's, reversing
some of the damage done when an earthquake and corresponding tsunami
flattened the statues and sent several topknots far inland in the early
1960's. The island to the right is Motu Marotiri. Just
behind me is Rano Raraku, the quarry, or birthplace of all the moai.

This view is actually from Rano Raraku, the quarry. Rano Raraku is a volcanic crater, and I had hiked up to the rim of the crater when I saw this view. |
Driving around I managed to get between the moai and the coast. |
