Within easy sight of Ahu Tongariki is Rano Raraku, or the Quarry, where all things moai were born.  This is the steepest part of the crater, which is easily accessible from inside the crater.  I spent a fair amount of time just sitting in the rectangular notch at the top in the dead center of the photo.  There is a moai being carved on the ground right next to it.
