I suppose there are several theories about why this set of moai is different.  One I've read was that it was put in place by 7 successive chiefs, etc... but to me was weak on why these would face outward.  My own theory (yeah, I'm an expert :) is the following:  Legend indicates that Hotu Matua, the "founder" who sailed from the vicinity of Tahiti, had six sons.  Those six sons descendents formed tribal groups.  To me, a possible meaning of this site is Hotu Matua and his six sons looking west towards Tahiti, since they stare off in the general direction.
