Description
Ahu Akivi
Seven moai facing towards the western sea- the only ones to face outward.
Ahu Ko Te Riku
The only moai with the ceremonial eyes, plus the fashionable top knot.
Ranu Kao
The stunning crater that is just outside Hanga Roa, the only town on the island.
Orongo Houses
These houses were used in conjunction with the Birdman cult- a latter day ceremony involving a race to return a tern's egg from a nearby island.  These houses are squeezed between the rim of Rano Kau and the sea.
Ahu Tongariki
My favorite shot- showing this fellow in the front with fifteen (the largest contingent on the island) in the background.
Ahu Tongariki
These are the fifteen restored moai at Tongariki.  It's worth noting that Japan financed the restoration of these moai in the 1970's.
Fallen Moai
A vast majority of the moai on the island are in worse state than this one.  At the end of the civil war that destroyed this civilization, the moai were knocked over and largely destroyed.  That so many are still standing is more a consequence of there having been nearly 1000 of them to start with.
Rano Raraku
This is the inside of the crater where all moai were carved.
Rano Raraku
Inside the crater walls.
Rano Raraku
Outside the crater walls.

Outside the crater walls.
Ahu Nau Nau
At the north end of the island, these fashionably top-knotted moai, replete with ancient carvings on the back of the platform, are set against a  pleasant grove of Tahitian palm trees.
Easter Island
This is the center of the island.  It's a pleasant place, quite a bit different than the barren coasts.  There are a few farms here, the largest settlement outside Hanga Roa.
