Torre Bauer, Vicuña, Chile
The town of Vicuña is lovely.  Stay there if you want a good feeling for sub-northern inland central Chile.  Or for a general good feeling for Chile in general.  It has a great Plaza de Armas (OK, they all have done one of those well), a great Hosteria, or Hotel-like place, called the Hosteria Vicuña, and a generally extremely pleasant atmosphere.  It is also the UFO capital of South America.  Or so they say.  Nearby is El Tololo observatory, and you can take tours of Mamalluca Observatory, a small one to be sure, but you get to look through a 14" and 17" telescope at the beautiful features of the Southern Sky.

This tower is somewhat Germanic in style and carries a German name because it was built by a German mayor.
