Tahai, Easter Island
Tahai is the most accessible group of Moai by foot from Hanga Roa, the only town, and where you will stay if you visit.  This site was restored between 1968 and 1972 by a group led by archaeologist William Mulloy.  The moai resembled ancestors and were intended to bestow basically good luck on their descendents.
