Cenote, Chichén Itzá, Mexico
Chichén Itzá means "Mouth of the Well", and this is where it gets it's name.  The cenote at Chichén Itzá is basically the water table that is visible in this depression.  Being as water is vital to life, it makes sense that cities would spring up near good sources of it.  The Mayan rain god Chac supposedly lived here, and needed a constant supply of children and virgins to keep him happy so that he would supply rain.  If you saw the 1984 movie Against All Odds, this is where they threw the body.
