Chichén Itzá, Mexico
The ruins in Chichén Itzá are
some of the better-preserved ruins in Mexico. As such, these are
relatively easy to get to. You can take regularly scheduled tours
from Cancún, about a three hour drive away. Also, there are
many other ruins near Cancún as well- Tulum, Coba, etc. Tulum
is exceptionally well preserved as well, and is located on a beautiful
coastal tract of land (see later in the Mexico gallery).
This view is from near the great pyramid, and shows a Mayan market place.
Those columns at one time supported a roof- most likely thatched, that
protected those selling their goods in the market.
The Mayan culture, though widespread, disappeared rather quickly around
1000 years ago. They were never as organized as the Aztecs, but they
still built quite impressive cities.
