Tenochtitlan, Mexico City
The ancient version of Mexico City was Tenochtitlan, on Lake Tenochtitlan.  It was the seat of the Aztec government.  You can see a model of the city later in this gallery.  The city was destroyed by the Spanish when they conquered the New World.  The location of these ruins were unknown until an excavation for a building uncovered them right on the main square in downtown Mexico City.  These are right next to the cathedral.  This was the main pyramid (encased by another pyramid, which was common).  The statues on display were unearthed here as well.  When viewing the picture, ignore the left part of the picture, I was very close when I took this and it does not line up so well- but the rest of the picture is well worth it.
