Oberwesel Tower & Schönburg- In the distance
on the hill- built in the 12th century, now a hotel

Burg Reichenstein- Built in the 13th century, now a hotel

On the Rhine
These are some of the sights along the Rhine you will see driving or cruising.  I recommend driving so you can stop and explore the castles.  Make sure to drive both sides of the river.

Burg Katz- Built in the late 14th century to collect tolls. Katz = Cat

Burg Maus- Built sometime before Burg Katz, also to collect tolls.  Maus = Mouse

Marksburg

Mauseturm- Old customs post guarding the river.

Heidelberg Castle
This castle made from the red sandstone of the nearby Neckar river, was built in the mid-16th century, and is one of the best examples of German Renaissance architecture.  It was ruined by the French barely a hundred years later and left as such.

Festung Königstein
This spectacular medieval fortress is close both to Dresden and the Czech Republic border.  It sits on top of this large rocky outcrop, and was quite impenetrable in it's day.  More recently it was used by the Nazi's to store stolen art.  You can easily spend half a day here, at least, admiring both the fortress and the view.  The earliest building on the site was the castle, built in the 13th century.
