Blarney Castle Blarney Castle, take only photos, leave only lipstick! Built in the mid-15th century, it has become an icon. You kiss a stone hanging precipitously at the top to gain the gift of gab, or eloquence. This comes from the fact that Lord Blarney could talk circles around Elizabeth I (who was later terminated at the Tower of London, fyi). I've highlighted the location of the stone below. Bunratty Castle Bunratty Castle, near Shannon, was built in the early 1400's by the McNamara's. It's quite an impressive block of stone, and it's in a pretty setting, if a bit touristy with the folk park next door. There are hotels conveniently next door, should you choose to have an extended visit. Both images ©2000, Jeffrey L. Cooper |

Dublin Castle Dublin Castle was built in the 13th century, and was a symbol of British control over Ireland. Record Tower, shown here, is the only remaining part of the original construction. It is attached to the chapel, on the right. Both images ©2000, Jeffrey L. Cooper |
