Description
Dublin Castle, Ireland
Right in the heart of Dublin, the castle is more a fortress surrounding once-important buildings, including a cathedral, shown here next to a most impressive tower.
Rhein Castles, Germany
Here's a sampling of castles on the Rhein River- Burg Kats & Burg Maus, Burg Reichenstein, Mauseturm and Oberwesel Tower.  All are labeled.
Lago di Garda, Italy
I'm not sure if this is a small castle, or a very nice house.  It is beautifully situated on a spit of land in Lago di Garda, replete with a splendid mountain backdrop.  This is one of my favorite pictures.
Burg Burghausen, Germany
Burg Burghausen sits in Germany on the border with Austria, and looks commanding down on their neighbor over the river.  This composite shot gives you several views of the castle complex.
Bunratty Castle, Ireland
This imposing castle is near Shannon, Ireland.  It's not large, but is quite tall for its size.
Beaumaris Castle, Wales
One of the few castles with functional moats, Beaumaris Castle is on the Isle of Anglesey in northwestern Wales.  It is quite a stunning castle to visit.
The Barbican, Warsaw, Poland
This is a gate that was preserved from a wall that once helped protect old Warsaw, from the 1500's.
Caernarfon Castle, Wales
This castle is also in northwestern Wales.  It is the one where Prince Charles was crowned Prince of Wales.  It is quite well formed, and you can climb up in the towers for better views.
Castle Stalker, Scotland
I don't know much about this one, but it's one you don't see a lot.  It is situated off the west coast of Scotland somewhere in the vicinity of Fort William.
Egeskov Slot, Denmark
Another near perfect castle, this one also has a moat.  It is situated on the island of Funen about an hour south of Odense.
Festung Königstein, Germany
Another rare one, this one's in the former East German, about 6 kilometers from the Czech border.  It's not too far from Dresden.
Harlech Castle, Wales
Wales is full of great castles.  Harlech is in the middle west coast, up on a cliff with commanding views of the sea.
Hohenschwangau, Germany
This is the birth castle of crazy King Ludwig.  As if this weren't fairytale enough, he had to go outdo it nearby.  Inset is view from his newer castle.
Newschwanstein, Germany
This was crazy King Ludwig's coupe de grace.  He built it overlooking his childhood castle, and this is the one from which Disney drew its inspiration.
Neuschwanstein, Germany
This is the same fantasy castle at night during a light snow.  It is very ghostly and seems more haunted than fairytale.
Ciechanow Castle, Poland
Ciechanow Castle is about an hour's drive north of Warsaw.  Definitely not a tourist trap, there weren't any other tourists there when we visited.  The rain probably didn't help matters, but I love having a castle to myself.
Heidelberg, Germany
This is one of the more famous ones on a rather dreary day.  Got a good view of it, and I like the even light the overcast sky lends it.
Kilchurn Castle, Scotland
Near Loch Awe, Kilchurn is largely abandoned, free, and no tourists.  I loved it.  It's in a stunning setting in the majestic Scottish mountains.
San Marino
Smack in the heart of Italy, the tiny country of San Marino was once a majestic fortress on top of Mount Titano.  This view is from inside looking out on the beautiful Italian countryside.
Walls of Tallinn, Estonia
The city of Tallinn is 800 years old, and the old city was protected in part by these walls and towers.  This view is looking towards the sea from the high point in the old city.
Tower of London, England
Once a castle and a prison, many people were executed here, included some wives of Henry the 8th.  Now a major tourist destination, it also houses the Royal Crown Jewels.
