Rievaulx Abbey
Just outside York, most people miss this completely because it is off the beaten path.  Rievaulx Abbey was a Cistercian house founded in 1131.  Because it is not well known, you can have a rather quiet time here to explore on your own.  I rather prefer that when visiting ruins, as it makes it feel, well, more ruined.
