Kitt Peak National Observatory, Arizona
Sitting at 6000 feet above sea level (about 2000m), Kitt Peak is an ideal place for astronomical observations.  It's in the middle of the desert, and so has very dry air and cool nights conducive to high-quality imaging.  The biggest threat is from nearby Tucson city lights, but public awareness and cooperation from the city has helped contain the threat.  This is the view near the visitor's center, and you are looking at the 2.1m telescope.
