Kitt Peak National Observatory, Arizona
As you walk up to the McMath-Pierce telescope, it soars above you. You can go in at ground level where the sloping part meets the ground. From inside, you can see the large mirrors and powerful shaft of sunlight plunging into the earth below. You can also walk around behind where I am standing and go into the laboratory area and watch the scientists work. If you are lucky, they will come out and talk to you (some other tourists I talked to later had such an experience).
