Sunset Crater National Monument, Arizona
Sunset Crater National Monument is just a short distance north of Flagstaff.  It is a volcanic cinder cone.  The black material pervading the picture, including that in the foreground, is volcanic cinder.  Sunset Crater is geologically young- humans have seen its formation some thousands of years ago.  Trees have taken hold, but it is a somewhat hostile environment still.
