Presidio of San Francisco, California
Run by the National Park Service, the Presidio of San Francisco was founded by the Spanish in 1776, taken over by Mexico in 1822, and finally came into US possession in 1848.  It served as a military post until 1994.  It is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.  This view from just south of the Golden Gate Bridge looks back at the city of San Francisco, and you can see the Exploratorium on the left.
