Santa Barbara Royal Presidio, California
The Royal Presidio was commissioned by King Carlos III in 1782 to protect this part of New Spain.  This was one of four presidios in California- San Diego, San Francisco, and Monterrey were the others.  The whitewashed adobe buildings have lasted for over 200 years in earthquake-prone California- I suppose no real surprise since they were meant to be a fortress.
