In the richly moist environment in Hawaii, the fern palm, a prehistoric-looking plant, grows readily.  We brought one home from a nursery, but I would say it's only doing so-so.  We planted it indoors and try to keep it misted, but it's hard to recreate the extremely humid environment to which they are adapted.  This stand was near the Thurston Lava Tube path.
