Pu'uhonua o Honaunau was established in the middle of the last millennium, in use from approximately the 1500's to the 1800's. It was used by the royals as an ideal location- good access from the sea and fresh water from Mauna Loa. It was also a sanctuary where disgraced or defeated warriors could live in peace until cleared of their sin by a priest.
