Outside of the crater rim area, but still in the park, we saw a set of tree molds.  The trees were quickly enveloped by lava many hundreds of years ago.  They contained enough water to freeze the lava around them, creating the mold.  Quickly consumed by fire, the trees then burned and left these holes.  These are on the road that leads partway up Mauna Loa.
