The seals are protected here, and whenever one decides to come up on a busy beach for a nap in the warm sun, there are "minders", people who volunteer their time to watch them and keep other people away. They put up a small barricade to keep people away, and stood watch nearby. As well, they help educate the usually oblivious mainland tourists about the seal, their plight, and their hope and conservation.
