Chickens are endemic in Kauai. They were brought to the islands by the original Polynesians, and attempts to control them on the other islands through the introduction of mongooses, though effective, had drastic consequences for the native bird populations. They were never introduced on Kauai, so the chickens proliferate. I just
had
to photograph one crossing the road... referencing an old children's joke.
